OP

Earlier this week I asked on an Instagram poll which you prefer: Cleansing balm or cleansing oil. The results were actually surprising!!
I expected a large majority to say you like balms better, but it turns out 60% were in favor of an oil cleanser.
I explained some of the drawbacks of going with a balm formulation (including the common use of polyethylene, which can be replaced with synthetic wax) and discussed the use of essential oils within a balm or oil cleanser.
So that's what we're chatting about today! Balms vs oils, as well as fragrance, including essential oils. From the feedback on Instagram, it's pretty clear most of you are very much against any form of fragrance, even essential oils, and that's why we're going to do a deep dive into this topic.
Here's what I want to know:
Do you double cleanse?

What is the reason behind your no-fragrance stance?

Go ahead and answer the polls above and we'll chat today at 5pm PST!! I want to pick your brain about these topics. 🤓

Hey guys! Thanks for joining today. ☺️
peeterpanhow can you tell?
Good question! Many people know they are sensitive to fragrance by process of elimination; some common reactions including redness, itching, rash, or even contact dermatitis.

Having sensitive skin makes it really hard to try different cleansing oils and balms😓 I think most times it’s the combination of the oils and balms clogging my pores, the synthetic ingredients the products contain, and fragrance

Britt_96what is a double cleanser?
Double cleanse means a 2-step cleansing routine, starting with either an oil cleanser or balm cleanser first, then following with a traditional cleanser.

So judging from the poll I put up on Instagram earlier this week, I think it's safe to say fragrance is a big problem for many people!! For that reason, I'm going to move away from a formulation that contains fragrance. I'm just curious to learn more about how fragrance affects people.

I’ve tried the neutrogena micellar water to take my makeup off but it can be irritating at times

I'm in the same boat as you! I haven't been able to narrow down what aggravates my skin beyond retinol when I don't use it properly... so I always just avoid fragrance in product just in case!

I’ve always been interested in learning about how fragrance affects my skin and personally I’ve learned that it makes me breakout

A cleansing oil or balm, however, shouldn't be clogging your pores! It might be something in the formulations you've tried that isn't quite doing its job.

Do you think it's the actual formula or do you think it's the rubbing of the skin when you use it?

That was the bulk of the responses we got actually. a LOT of people break out from fragrance!!

I try to not rub my skin at all whether it’s cleansing or applying products. I use a cotton pad with the product and gently wipe my make up off, could’ve possibly been the cleanser I was using which might’ve not taken the product off throughly

let's say you start double cleansing for the first time

I like balms because it feels less messy.

we're deciding between an oil and balm, but yes we'll be doing a cleansing duo with a balm/oil + a cleanser!

I used to use Banila Co's cleansing balm, but for some reason, wasn't the biggest fan of it... It felt like there was still a film on my face, but that's just personal preference!

Oooo that totally makes sense... I also tried Missha's cleansing oil, but the formulation wasn't the best for my skin! I did prefer cleansing oils over cleansing balms though since I didn't have to dig my fingers into it (if there wasn't a spatula to use)

I’ve been trying out the cleansing balm by Farmacy, with the combination of the cerave cleanser, which seems to be working just fine for me, I need to research and see why that’s different than others I’ve used

Did you have to dig your fingers into it though to get the product out? That was always the thing that turned me off about balms
